Waterproofing checklist: what to check at each stage, before it gets covered

Waterproofing is hidden work. Once tiles, screed or paint go on, nobody can see whether the corners were treated or the second coat was applied. That is why most waterproofing disputes come down to one person's word against another's. A checklist, filled in at each stage with photos, turns hidden work into a record anyone can verify.

Quick answer

How do I check if waterproofing is done properly?

Check at each stage, not at the end. Before work: the source is identified and the surface is clean, sound and dry enough. During: cracks and joints are filled, corners, drains and pipes are reinforced, each coat is applied to full coverage with drying time between coats. Then a pond or flood test before covering. Photograph each stage with the date.

Published

Part of the how waterproofing is done guide, which covers every usual source.

Use this checklist when

  • You are supervising waterproofing at home or for a society
  • A contractor is about to start or is midway through the work
  • Earlier waterproofing failed and you want this job checked properly

Extra checks by area

Often more than one source is at work, and each needs its own fix.

  1. Area 1

    Bathroom and toilet

    Hidden under tiles.

Check specially: Pipe collars, floor drain, wall-floor corners, membrane height on walls, slope.

Pass looks like: No damp below after a 24-hour pond test; epoxy joints after tiling.

  2. Area 2

    Terrace

    Exposed to sun and movement.

Check specially: Parapet corners, outlets, cracks, existing tiles tapped for hollowness.

Pass looks like: No standing water after rain; no damp below after the flood test.

  3. Area 3

    Outside walls

    Driving rain.

Check specially: Cracks filled, window and chajja joints sealed, coating continuous.

Pass looks like: Even coverage with no thin patches; no damp inside after rain or a spray test.

  4. Area 4

    Water tank

    Constant pressure and drinking water.

Check specially: Pipe openings, corners, honeycombs repaired, lining suitable for potable water.

Pass looks like: No drop in water level over a set time with outlets closed.

Methods follow proven, manufacturer-approved waterproofing systems. The right one for your building depends on what is found on site.

Before work starts

Most failures are decided here.

  1. 1The water source and the area to be treated are written down.
  2. 2The system, number of coats and coverage are named.
  3. 3Loose plaster, old failed coatings, dust and oil are removed.
  4. 4The surface is as dry as the system requires; wet patches are noted.
  5. 5Cracks are opened and filled; the slope to drains and outlets is checked.

During application

Be on site, or ask for dated photos, at each of these.

  1. 1Primer or bonding coat applied where the system needs it.
  2. 2Corners, wall-floor junctions, drains, outlets and pipe collars treated before the main coats.
  3. 3Reinforcement fabric embedded where the system calls for it.
  4. 4First coat at full coverage; second coat in the other direction after the stated drying time.
  5. 5Material used matches the quantity the area needs. Leftover full buckets mean thin coats.

Testing and handover

The test is the only proof before the layer is hidden.

  1. 1Pond test for bathrooms and balconies: drain blocked, a few centimetres of water for at least 24 hours.
  2. 2Flood or water test for terraces before the protection layer.
  3. 3Spray test on outside walls and window joints where a leak was the problem.
  4. 4Below and beside the area checked for damp after the test.
  5. 5Protection layer, tiles or screed laid only after the test is passed.
  6. 6Photos, test dates and the system used handed over as a record.

What a photo can and cannot tell you

Photo guidance points to the likely source. It is not a confirmed diagnosis.

A clear photo can show

  • Whether corners, pipes and drains look treated
  • Coverage gaps and thin patches
  • Standing water after a test

A photo cannot settle

  • Exact coating thickness
  • Whether coats cured properly
  • Whether the surface was dry enough

Simple checks before you call anyone

  1. 1Print or save this checklist and tick each item with a date.
  2. 2Take photos at every stage before it is covered.
  3. 3Count the material delivered against the area to be covered.
  4. 4Be present for the water test.

When you need someone on site

  • The job is large or for a society
  • You cannot be on site at each stage
  • A previous job failed and the contractor disputes it

A site diagnosis helps check the likely source. For hidden or recurring leaks, thermal imaging and moisture checks can help narrow down the water path before deciding whether anything needs opening up. In Vadodara? Common mistakes that waste money

  • Checking only at the end, when everything is covered.
  • Accepting a verbal 'two coats done' without seeing them.
  • Skipping the water test to save a day.
  • Covering the layer before it has cured.

Before you accept a contractor's quote

  • Does the quote list the stages and the tests?
  • Does it allow you or your representative to inspect each stage?
  • Will stage photos be shared?
  • Is payment linked to stages that are checked?

Already have quotes? Membrain can compare them on scope, not just price. Planning the work instead? A written specification makes quotes comparable.

How this guide is built

Diagnostic basis

Membrain separates visible signs from possible water-entry mechanisms, then asks for evidence that can distinguish the remaining causes.

Repair-source governance

Public guides stay brand-neutral. When Membrain creates a repair plan, methods and products come from current approved manufacturer documents in its technical library.

Evidence limits

A photo cannot confirm concealed pipes, waterproofing layers or moisture depth. When remote evidence cannot separate the causes, a site inspection is the correct next step.

Waterproofing sahi hui ya nahi, kaise check karein?

Kaam ke end mein nahi, har stage par check karo: surface saaf aur sookha, darar bhari, kone-nali-pipe par extra layer, har coat poora, aur coat ke beech sukhne ka samay.

Tiles ya screed se pehle paani bhar ke 24 ghante ka test karwao aur neeche dekho. Har stage ki tareekh wali photo rakho, yahi aapka record hai.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know waterproofing was done properly?

Stage photos, the material quantity used, and a passed water test before covering are the clearest evidence. Without them, you are trusting a claim.

What is a pond test?

The drain is blocked and the waterproofed floor is filled with a few centimetres of water for at least 24 hours. If no damp appears below or beside, the layer is holding.

What are signs waterproofing was not done properly?

Damp returning within one or two monsoons, damp starting at corners, drains or pipes, peeling coatings, and standing water on terraces usually point to skipped preparation, details or coats.

Can I supervise waterproofing myself?

Yes, with a checklist and a few site visits at the right stages. You do not need to know the chemistry to check that corners were treated, coats were applied and a test was passed.

Every stage checked, with proof

This is how Membrain works: the plan sets the stages, and each one is checked against it, with photos, before the next covers it. Share a photo for a free plan and the checkpoints your job should pass. Site visits and verified partners are in Vadodara only for now.
