Reading a moisture pattern before naming a cause
How the direction, extent and location of dampness narrow the likely water path before anyone recommends a repair.

Why the pattern comes first
A damp patch is the place water became visible, not necessarily the place where it entered. Water can travel along a wall face, slab soffit, plaster interface, beam or pipe before it appears.
That is why the visible stain should be read as evidence, not treated as the source by default. The useful sequence is: observe the pattern, form the plausible alternatives, then look for evidence that separates them.
What the direction can suggest
- Top-down staining raises water arriving from above: a terrace or roof, a service above, an opening detail, a slab-wall junction or an external feature draining back toward the wall.
- Bottom-up staining raises ground moisture, a low-level external condition, or a leak near or below floor level.
- A horizontal band raises a construction joint, slab-wall interface, buried service or change in material.
- A localised patch raises a point source such as a penetration, concealed pipe or isolated facade defect.
- Diffuse shallow dampness without a clear gradient raises condensation or a general envelope problem rather than a single entry point.
Context changes the differential
- A top-floor room puts the terrace or roof directly above the problem.
- An external wall is exposed to driven rain; an internal partition is not.
- A bathroom, kitchen, utility or water tank next to or above the patch introduces an internal water source.
- Whether the problem follows rain, usage or neither is often more useful than another close-up photograph.
What to record
Record what is observed separately from what is inferred. If a feature cannot be determined from the available evidence, say that explicitly rather than treating it as absent.
Official public references
These references anchor relevant Indian waterproofing practice. They do not by themselves confirm the cause at a specific building.

This note explains diagnostic reasoning. It does not specify a product, quantity or application method. Repair systems should be selected against the confirmed site condition and the current approved manufacturer documentation.
